We knew we were going to homeschool Tootie from the time she was around a year old. Thankfully, my husband’s job allows this Nana to work from home so I’m able to do that. Her birthday fell just beyond the cut-off date of August 15, so even though she turned five this year, we had to register her for Pre-K.
Tootie absolutely loves science. Being in Pre-K, we spend time learning about bugs and insects, trees, bees, and other pollinators, and doing easy little experiments. I found this book on Amazon for kid-friendly experiments and bought it to see if it would be something I could use for her.

The experiments are short, which works really well for those short attention spans, and Tootie gets so excited when I let her look through the book and choose one to do. Today, she picked one that uses three colors to make three other colors.
Each experiment starts by asking a question, and if there are any cautions to consider, it will list those. The materials list is usually just stuff you have lying around the house somewhere anyway, so you won’t have to make a lot of special purchases.

Each step is explained well, and it will even suggest a way to run the experiment again doing something different to see if the end result is the same.

To wrap it all up, each experiment ends with explaining how and why the experiment worked. What a great little way of introducing the scientific method to a five-year-old.

With over a hundred experiments that are split between science, technology, engineering, art, and math, I did not go wrong in making this purchase. It’s a great book for kids ages 5 to 10.
What about you? What great books have you run across to help with homeschooling?
